Is Aarogya Setu app safe?

Aarogya Setu app is safe, says the government.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has recently given out a word on the Aarogya Setu
app suggesting that the app is completely safe and used only for coronavirus contact tracing.

How it Works?

The stated purpose of this app is to spread awareness of COVID-19 and to connect essential COVID-19 - related health services to the people of India. It is a tracking app which uses the smartphone,s GPS and Bluetooth features to track the coronavirus infection. With Bluetooth, it tries to determine the risk if one has been near (within six feet of) a COVID-19 - infected person, by scanning through a database of known cases across India. Using location information, it determines whether the location one is in belongs to one of the infected areas based on the data available.

Technical Details

Aarogya Setu has four sections:
  • User Status (tells the risk of getting COVID-19 for the user)
  • Self Assess (helps the users identify COVID-19 symptoms and their risk profile)
  • COVID-19 Updates (gives updates on local and national COVID-19 cases)
  • E-pass integration (If applied for E-pass, it will be available)

How to use?

The steps required to use the app are as follows:
1.Firstly, download the app from google play store.
2.After you've run the app, allow it to access your device's location, as prompted.
3.You'll get an OTP on our register number, enter the OTP.
4Then,choose your gender from the option given.
5.Enter your full name, the age, and then profession, as asked.
6.You'll be asked about your foreign travel history in last 30 days. Give the appropriate answer. Tour foreign travel history, if any, will be matched with list of those who've tested positive, with the help of ICMR database.

Then, the app asks you weather or not you are ready to volunteer in the times of need. Assuming you answer Yes, a 20-Second assessment test starts.

After completing the process in your phone, it will detect other nearby smartphone that also have the app installed. It can then figure out the risk of infection based on sophisticated parameters if any of these contacts is tested positive.
